Deliberations on Reforming Media Education

Deliberations on Reforming Media Education A significant meeting of Heads of Departments, Deans, and leading media experts from various universities across Uttarakhand was held at Lok Bhawan under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.). The meeting focused on the theme “Media Education in the Age of AI and Digital Information Ecosystem: Challenges, Ethics, and Opportunities,” where extensive deliberations took place.

During the meeting, Prof. Sheel Shukla, Director of LGSB Subharti College of Journalism and Mass Communication under Ras Bihari Bose Subharti University (RBBSU), actively participated and presented his views. Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that AI and digital media have completely transformed the nature of information dissemination, making it essential for media education to evolve accordingly. He emphasized that media is not just a means of delivering news but also plays a crucial role in shaping responsible citizens.

Prof. Sheel Shukla suggested the inclusion of Crisis and Disaster Communication in journalism curricula and proposed the introduction of a common entrance examination for journalism education. In his address, he expressed gratitude to Dr. Atul Krishna, Chairman of the Subharti Group, and Prof. Dr. Himanshu Aeran, Vice-Chancellor of the University, acknowledging their support and expressing confidence that under their guidance, the journalism institute of Subharti University will soon establish high academic standards.

It was also highlighted that the journalism institute under Subharti University has been named “Lieutenant Gyan Singh Bisht Subharti College of Journalism and Mass Communication” in honor of the martyr Lieutenant Gyan Singh Bisht, reflecting the national character of the institution.

On the occasion of March 17, observed as the martyrdom day of Lieutenant Gyan Singh Bisht, Prof. Sheel Shukla, on behalf of Subharti University, presented a commemorative portrait of the institution to the Hon’ble Governor.

The meeting, organized with the support of Doon University, saw experts from various universities emphasizing the growing impact of AI, its responsible usage, media ethics, fact-checking mechanisms, and the importance of practical education.

Concluding the session, the Governor stated that such dialogues should be held regularly to provide new direction to media education and ensure meaningful outcomes.

In this context, Prof. Sheel Shukla was also entrusted with the responsibility of leading an important project on “Necessary Reforms in National Media,” which is being seen as a significant initiative in the field of media education.
