Every year millions of students dream of studying medicine. However, only a few manage to secure MBBS admission in India. Getting an MBBS seat is a highly competitive affair. More than 18 lakh aspirants compete every year to get a seat in the renowned medical college in India. The very first challenge candidates face getting MBBS admission is qualifying for the NEET.
MBBS Admission 2024
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the NEET exam once a year. NEET-UG is the single national-level entrance test conducted for MBBS admission in India, as recognized by the Supreme Court of India. Admission to over 2,000 MBBS seats in AIIMS institutions and 250 seats in JIPMER is also granted through the NEET exam. A total of 600+ medical colleges, 15+ AIIMS, and 2 JIPMER institutions grant MBBS admission based on NEET results. Comparing the MBBS seats and the number of aspirants who appear in the exam, the competition for MBBS admission 2023 is increasing exponentially.
Many students who qualify NEET exam with low marks struggle to get admission in government medical colleges. Whereas the fees of private MBBS colleges are very high. In India because of the high tuition fees many students from the middle-class struggle to get MBBS admission. The only hope of these students is to get MBBS admission in India only if they qualify for NEET exams with good marks.
The screening process of NTA for MBBS admission is very strict and based entirely on merit in the NEET exam. After announcing the NEET result, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the further MBBS admission 2023 process. MCC grants MBBS admission to 15% All India Quota, deemed/central universities/Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), and Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) institutes. MBBS admission to the remaining 85% state quota seats is granted by the counselling authorities of the respective state.

As aforementioned, for MBBS admission there is only one all-India medical entrance exam - NEET. NTA conducts the medical entrance test based on the NEET-UG syllabus which includes topics from class 11 and 12 CBSE curriculum. As per the NEET exam pattern, MBBS admission aspirants need to answer 180 multiple choice questions out of 200 questions in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
The NEET 2023 question paper is divided into three sections - Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology). The NEET biology section carries the highest weightage with 100 questions that need to be answered, which fetch 360 marks. The remaining two sections of the NEET question paper have equal weightage, that is 100 questions (total) and 180 marks each.
To secure MBBS admission in India candidates need to qualify for the NTA NEET cutoff. For general category candidates, the cutoff of NEET for MBBS admission is the 50th percentile.
