Experts Highlight the Role of Anaesthesia in Safe Surgery and Better Patient Care
Expert Lecture, Practical Demonstration of CPR and Rangoli Competition Promote the Message of Patient Safety Among Students
Dehradun, October 16: The Faculty of Allied & Healthcare Sciences at Ras Bihari Bose Subharti University, Dehradun, organised an awareness programme on the occasion of World Anaesthesia Day on Friday. Held at the university’s Lokpriya Auditorium, the programme aimed to raise awareness about the crucial role of anaesthesia in ensuring patient safety before, during and after surgery. The event featured an expert lecture, a practical demonstration of emergency medical assistance and a rangoli competition centred on the theme of safe anaesthesia and safe surgery.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Prof. (Dr.) Desh Deepak, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of the University; Dr. Shivanjali, Dean, Faculty of Allied & Health Sciences; Mrs. Swati Sharma, Head of the Department; and Dr. Aastha Srivastava, the guest speaker. Students presented Saraswati Vandana, marking an auspicious beginning to the programme. Mrs. Swati Sharma welcomed the distinguished guests, faculty members and students.
Dr. Aastha Srivastava, Associate Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology, GBCM, delivered an expert lecture on the theme “Patient Care: Before, During and Beyond Surgery.” She highlighted the importance of pre-operative patient preparation, safe anaesthesia management during surgery and appropriate post-operative care. The lecture particularly emphasised safe surgical practices, patient-centred treatment and the vital contribution of anaesthesia professionals throughout the surgical journey.

A major highlight of the programme was the demonstration of emergency medical response techniques under the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) Pancharakshak Programme. Dr. Aastha Srivastava explained the fundamentals of Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and initial assistance in life-threatening emergencies.
The practical demonstration using a mannequin provided students with an opportunity to understand essential CPR techniques and the basic principles of responding effectively to medical emergencies.
To encourage creativity and health awareness among students, a rangoli competition was organised on the theme “Safe Anaesthesia and Safe Surgery.” Participants conveyed the message of patient safety through colourful designs and artistic expression. The teams securing first, second and third positions were presented with mementos in recognition of their performances, while certificates were awarded to the other participants to appreciate their involvement.
The programme provided students with an opportunity to understand the importance of anaesthesia, safe surgical practices, coordinated patient care and prompt responses during medical emergencies. The expert lecture and practical demonstration helped connect theoretical knowledge with practical healthcare situations, while the rangoli competition communicated the importance of patient safety through a creative medium.

At the conclusion of the programme, Mrs. Swati Sharma, Head of the Department, Faculty of Allied & Healthcare Sciences, expressed her gratitude to the dignitaries, guest speaker, faculty members and students for their participation and support. The event was conducted with the support of the organising team, including Adrita Sinha, Organising Secretary.
