With the introduction of reservations for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the All-India Quota (AIQ) of medical education, there was a moment of chaos among all the candidates of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET PG), including the general students as well as the OBC and EWS candidates.

Why a moment of consideration for the candidates?

The reason being that the NEET PG candidates have completed filling and submitting up their forms last year in the month of December as they had their exams to be conducted in the month of January 2021. Due to the hike in the Covid-19 cases all round, the exams have had to be postponed. After few dates, National Board of Examination (NBE) released tentative date for NEET PG exam as 11th of September 2021. As of in a meeting held on 29th of July 2021, the government has announced certain percentage of reservations for the NEET OBC and EWS students as the reservations for SC and ST’s already existed. After the meeting, they came onto a conclusion that 27% of the NEET Undergraduate and Postgraduate seats will be reserved for the Other Backward classes (OBC) and 10% will be reserved for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). After this announcement the NEET PG students belonging to the OBC and EWS background were in a moment of perplexion as they have not mentioned their quota in the form while filling it as the reservation was announced a few days ago but they had their forms submitted in the month of December, 2020. A NEET PG aspirant also quoted that, “The registration for the NEET-PG were completed last year in December itself as NEET-PG was originally scheduled to be held in January 2021. But due to a sudden increase in the Covid-19 cases, the exam was forced to be postponed and now we want to make the required changes to the registration form so that we can stand eligible for the new quotas.” Stated Harshit Sahai.

Students started knocking doors of the authorities for consideration of this issue. Many NEET- PG aspirants reached out the authorities of the examination to further discuss the re opening of registration form but had to return disappointed.

Why do the aspirants want the registration window opened again?

After the announcement of reservation of 27% seats for OBC and 10% seats for EWS in the medical education by the Central Government, the NEET PG aspirants had a moment of chaos because they have not mentioned their eligibility for this quota as the registration forms were filled in the month of December 2020 and the reservations have been passed now. As a result the one who are eligible for this quota are reaching out the authorities to consider the issue and provide the required solution so that the aspirants can avail the quota. Also the general category students have to consider their forms because now it would turn out to be difficult for them to clear their Examination at a go. Also a guardian of an aspirant stated, “ The highest education system is currently burdened off with reservation and inclusion of all round new quotas in AIQ Sears and it clearly seems to be a clear political move and nothing includes anything that would better the life of students.”

The aspirants who are eligible for the new quota announced are approaching the authorities for consideration of their issue and re open the registration window so that they can state themselves eligible for the quota. The general category candidates are utterly disappointed with the announcement of this quota as they think this off to be a political move.
