Blog

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is the door through which students wish to study medical and dental courses in India. The test adopts a well-organised marking pattern, with an overall of 720 marks.

NEET UG has three major subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The exam contains a total of 200 questions, out of which 180 have to be attempted. Every question is worth 4 marks, and 1 mark is cut for each incorrect answer.

– Biology (Botany + Zoology) – 360 Marks

Biology is the most crucial subject in NEET because it carries 50% of the total marks. It contains 90 questions (45 Botany and 45 Zoology), and each correct answer has a 4-mark reward, giving the total mark of 360.

– Chemistry – 180 Marks- Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry constitute the Chemistry section. It has 45 questions, and every correct answer is worth 4 marks, totalling 180 marks.

– Physics – 180 Marks- Physics is regarded by many students as the most difficult section. It has 45 questions, and every right answer is worth 4 marks, totalling 180 marks.

NEET UG 2025: Classification of Subjects

Each subject is further divided into two sections:

– Section A – 35 questions (compulsory)

– Section B – 15 questions (10 to be attempted only)

So, the students will attempt a total of:

– 50 questions from Biology (out of 100)
– 35 + 10 from Chemistry
– 35 + 10 from Physics

+4 marks for a correct answer

-1 mark for a wrong answer

0 marks for unattempted question

For optimal scoring in NEET UG, the student should be more concerned about Biology but at the same time ensure that the foundations of Physics and Chemistry are firm. Intuitive preparation, accuracy, and efficient time management are the keys to obtaining a high score in this competitive examination.

Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had replied to an RTI query asking whether students from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2025. In its clarification, the Commission has said that NIOS-registered students can appear and are eligible for the NEET UG.

“The students are permitted to study an additional subject from NIOS with the condition that the study needs to be carried out from any authorized institutions,” read the RTI clarification from the NMC.
