MDS Admission  eligibility

Like MBBS, the eligibility criteria for enrolment in the BDS degree course is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology with at least 50% marks (40% for reserved categories). BDS Admission is through qualifying a general, nationwide competitive examination NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) only.

NEET and MDS Admission

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is mandatory for enrolment to the MDS degree. NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts the entrance exam every six months. This year NEET MDS  to be held on 26 July,).
For MDS Admission, it is compulsory to qualify NEET MDS  exam, and NEET is now mandatory for AYUSH courses (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc.), as well. To qualify the NEET MDS  exam, the candidate must obtain a 50 percentile (not percentage) in the test. Successful candidates then participate in the counselling process organized by the respective authorities (Central, States, and Union Territories). Counselling involves the allotment of seats to the candidates, based on NEET rank. Candidates have to fill-in college choices (priority ranking of colleges) concerning the availability of seats in the MDS course. Both government dental colleges and private dental colleges at the level of All India quota and State quota are part of the counselling process.
(a) All India quota: This quota has 15% seats of all government dental colleges from all states (except Andhra Pradesh and J&K) and 100% seats of all deemed dental universities. MCC (Medical Counselling Committee), a central govt. authority manages the process of counselling.
(b) State quota: This quota has 85% seats in all government dental colleges from respective states, and the admittance process is controlled by domiciliary status. This rule of domicile does not apply for private dental colleges situated in particular territories, as any candidate all over India can apply for enrolment in those private colleges as well.

STATE COUNSELING AUTHORITY

State authorities govern the counselling process. There are three rounds of counselling – 1st round and 2nd round are online, whereas the 3rd round is organized by DGME (Directorate General of Medical Education) at a predesignated venue. All the colleges (government and private) that participate in this procedure are recognized/approved by the Dental Council of India (DCI). Hence, it leaves no scope for difference between government BDS college and private BDS college in terms of infrastructure, faculty, campus area, etc. But because of the difference in fee structure, priority is always given to government BDS colleges.

Score requirement in NEET to get BDS Admission:
A candidate is required to attain a minimum NEET score of 450 or above for MDS admission in government dental college. For MDS admission in private dental colleges, 50 percentiles in NEET are sufficient.
MDS course duration
MDS degree course duration is five years, including 1 year of internship.
MDS internship salary?
There is no college fee for an internship. (Advice: college can pay you a stipend, talk to the management).
MDS Admission course fee?
The average MDS Admission course fee ranges from INR 1.5-3.5 Lacs per year (depends on government and private college).

Opportunities after a MDS degree
Post successful completion of the BDS course, you are qualified to practice as a dentist. DCI provides a license to practice as a dentist.
Here are the best options to go for:
• Set-up your clinic.
• Private/government hospitals for practice.
• Job postings in railways/army.

MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) course:
Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) is a degree course specialized in the field of operative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral medicine & radiology, periodontology & oral implantology, oral & maxillofacial surgery, conservative, endodontics, and aesthetic dentistry. MDS course duration is three years.

Opportunities after an MDS degree
• Research & Teaching – On completing the MDS course, you can go for a Ph.D. in Dental Science, to make a better contribution to the advancement. Also, you can become a teacher of Dental Science.
• Other government exams – UPSC, etc.

BDS vs MBBS. Scope and market value of BDS:

BDS degree is often compared to MBBS degree, and people take it for granted considering MBBS being better than BDS. However, in the government sector, there is no difference between MBBS and BDS as upon graduation, MBBS and BDS doctors are more or less similarly compensated. If you analyse the difference from a private sector viewpoint, things go in favour of BDS for its market value and total expenses.

• Comparative Analysis :
An MBBS course itself has no value unless there is a postgraduate (PG) specialization (MD). If you want to consider any specialization, then the foremost requirement is to clear MBBS and then go for PG to become a specialized doctor, say an Ophthalmologist (eye doctor), Paediatrician (child doctor), Gynaecologist (women’s doctor), etc. In comparison to MBBS, a qualified BDS candidate obtains specialization for dentistry upon graduate degree itself.

• Market Value of a Dentist:
After the BDS course, there is PG specialization in 19 distinct branches. Taking a case, a heart patient would want to go to a heart doctor who has PG specialization in heart/cardiovascular diseases. Likewise, for teeth or gums related problems, a patient would go to a BDS doctor, and not any MBBS doctor. Therefore, in this scenario, the BDS degree gets the advantage that it gets the market value directly after graduation and not requiring MDS course specialization, unlike MBBS.

• Tough PG Competition:
PG specialization (MD) is the most intensive academic qualification after the MBBS course, as 100% MBBS students go for PG to strengthen the career options and scope. It is indeed a fact that the number of seats is almost nothing in comparison to the applicants each year. While for BDS, only 20% – 30% go for PG (MDS course) as the BDS degree itself gives them specialization for teeth. Therefore, pursuing PG after a BDS degree is less competitive, making BDS less challenging.

• Total expenses:
MBBS course fee in private colleges lies in the range of 70-80 Lacs (complete package) even after the NEET exam and on government decided fee. While the BDS course fee in private colleges is only 8-10 Lacs, making the BDS degree course more economical.

• Private Practice:
A lot of equipment like an X-ray machine, ultrasound machine, lab diagnostics, etc., is required for clinical setup. An MBBS doctor can only do consultancy as private practice. However, after a BDS degree, there is an easy clinical set up as it requires two dental chairs (1.5 lacs each) for private practice.
Therefore, summarizing the benefits of BDS degree: early-stage specialization, very economical in terms of BDS course fee, BDS course (PG) not challenging, and private practice/ clinical setup.

Jobs opportunities After BDS Course:

• Dentist, Dental Surgeon, Dental health Consultant
• Lecturer
• Medical Writer
• Oral Pathologist
