Supreme Court to decide MBBS Fee: Students should pay for 4.5 or 5 years

NEET Bulletin(New Delhi, Desk): Apex court has taken up the matter whether MBBS fee which is paid by the students should be 5 years – the amount which most medical colleges are charging or 4.5 years – The duration of MBBS course define by the MCI norms. Apex court has put stay on the Telangana High Court order directing the state’s private medical colleges to collect MBBS fee instead of 5 years, only for 4.5 years. Apex court stated “Until further orders, there shall be stay of operation of the impugned order passed by the High Court.”

HC declared the state’s permission “arbitrary and illegal” of allowing the self-financing medical colleges to collect MBBS fee for 5 years even though the course duration is only 4.5 years and further directed the institutes to collect tuition fee only on stipulated duration for MBBS course and warning the concerned private medical colleges that the stringent action could be initiated in case directions not followed.
The association is challenging the HC order moving to the Supreme Court and sought relief mentioning “Expenditure incurred is for the entire year and not a part of it, The teachers are paid salaries for the whole year and the infrastructure of the college is also maintained for the whole year including some students undergo additional classes, examinations and clinical postings for extended duration of 6 years”.
